Split ends, known formally as Trichoptilosis is very common amongst us women.
The ends of our hair split when the natural protective oil from our scalp fails to reach the ends of our hair. Any chemical or physical trauma may lead this to occur. For example, long exposure to sun and heat (such as blow dryers, hair irons, etc.) that weathers the hair and dries it up may eventually lead to split ends. Interestingly enough, hair that is washed too often and has gone through lots of various shampoos may cause your hair to be dry and prone to split ends. Of course, infrequent haircuts and lack of hydrating treatments can make this condition worse. So what happens is that the damaged hair strand splits into two or three strands causing the hair to look unhealthy, stiff and raw. Since this is caused by the natural protective oils form our scalp not being able to reach the ends of our hair, it is more common in long hair but may also happen to short hair which is not in good condition and unhealthy. The split may be two or three centimeters long and the ends are considered old once they reach about ten centimeters.
Of course, the best way to keep your hair healthy and prevent split ends is to keep away from too much sun and heat (when going out in extreme weather conditions try to protect your hair with a head covering) and don’t wash it too often. However, the most important one is to trim your hair frequently. Believe it or not, but the more you trim your hair, the healthier it’ll be and the faster it’ll grow!
