The Brush

Today, brushes come in many shape, forms and styles with additional comfort for your convenience.

For as long as women have had hair, they have needed some way or better something to untangle, smooth out and style their hair. So of course, brushes have been around forever. However, the regular brush that we are used to today is nothing close to similar to the original ancient brushes. Believe it or not, the bristles on the brushes then were made of natural material such as animal hair, porcupine quills, shells and bones. I wonder what women now days would look like if we would still be using these brushes. Something tells me no one would brush their hair. The handles were generally made of wood. However, some were made of copper and bronze which made them look nicer and more comfortable to hold.

So how did this brush evolve into the brush we use today?

Well, in ancient times only the wealthy and upper class brushed and styled their hair. However, slowly everyone started caring for their hair; including middle and lower class. For this reason, they had to come up with cheaper material to make brushes for those who couldn’t afford the brushes made of natural material. In the mid 1800’s they started making metal brushes with elastic wire teeth, however, over time they switched over to plastic brushes with nylon bristles which is what we are used to today. Hair professionals however still insist that natural fibers, although more expensive, are still best for your hair.
